The Squid and the what the hell?!
Even though this is supposed to be a music in movies and television blog, I just wanted to express my confusion about The Squid and the Whale. First, I enjoyed it for the most part. However, why the hell was the younger son using masturbation as a form of acting out in response to his parents' divorce? He is definitely the most disturbing part of the movie. Second, why would Walt (the older son) try to pass Pink Floyd's, "Hey You", off as his own? Even though his parents are intellectuals, Walt is an idiot. What's even more idiotic is his defense for why he tried to pass the song as his own. His defense was that because he thought he could have written the song, he could use the song as his own. I mean I could have easily thought of the snuggie, but I didn't. As for "Hey You", I have never really listened to Pink Floyd, but from what a few of my friends tell me, Off the Wall is a musical "masterpiece". Van Morrison with Roger Waters, "Comfortably Numb", is one of my favorite songs of the moment, so maybe I'll listen to Off the Wall. However, Lou Reed's, "Street Hassle", is my favorite song in the movie, but I am already a Lou Reed fan.

I cannot get (500) Days out of my head.
My roomates and I spent the majority of our Saturday afternoon/night accumulating couch sores. Although the thought of staying in on a Saturday night does not sound appealing to most, I enjoy being boring and unproductive. After watching a few episodes of Felicity (Google this t.v. show!), we decided to watch(500) Days of Summer- again.
Every time I rewatch this movie I notice three things: 1. How increasingly annoying Zooey Deschanel's character acts. 2. Joseph Gordon- Levitt's charm. 3. That, for the most part, the music goes well with the movie.
The majority of the soundtrack is a great reflection of Tom's (Joesph Gordon-Levitt) emotional mindset. However, can someone tell me when Black Lips,"Bad Kids", played during the movie.
The tracks that grabbed my attention the most would have to be: The Smiths, "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out", Hall & Oates, "You Make My Dreams", and Carla Bruni, "Quelqu'un m'a dit".
Obviously, The Smiths must be included on the soundtrack because "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out", is central to their first real encounter. Also, if you are familiar with the song you get what kind of guy Tom is. Yes, in the beginning the narrator introduces Tom as a boy with a complete misreading of The Graduate and a fondness for sad, British pop songs. However, the fact that he likes The Smiths, more specifically, this song, foreshadows Tom's vulnerability.
Next up, Hall & Oates, "You Make My Dreams". Sidenote- Daryl Hall & John Oates remind me of Ted Danson and Tom Selleck circa Three Men and a Baby. Perhaps the only reason why the song caught my attention is because of the dance sequence. Anything involving an animated blue bird is bound to win me over.
Finally, Carla Bruni, "Quelqu'un m'a dit". Why do I love this song? Simply because it's pretty.

The inspiration
Alexandra Patsavas- her name may not sound familiar to some, but most likely you have heard her music playing in the background of an episode of Gossip Girl or Grey's Anatomy. She is a music surpervisor for television series and films. In addition to these credits, Alexandra also has her own record label, Chop Shop Records.
I still listen to Britney Spears, but just as my taste in television and movies has evoloved, so has my taste in music. I respect what Britney's music is supposed to be-frivolous, yet fun. However, as I have grown up, I have learned the importance of quality over quantity. My favorite musician, Jeff Buckley, has been dead since '97, but his music is timeless.
I heard "Hallelujah" for the first time while I was watching an episode of The OC, one of the shows that Alexandra Patsavas was a music supervisor for. Since then I pay attention to the music played in television and movies.
Thanks to Alexandra Patsavas and Jeff Buckley, music has become one of my main interests. I have decided to write about music featured in television and movies; however, I often shop around itunes for new music. So for my blog, my main focus will be on music in movies and television, but for some entries I will blog about a band I found online.
